Just this past Wednesday, construction of the new Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan
has officially begun. The site of the old WTC 6 building is where they are currently building footings for the 1,776 Ft tall skyscraper. The height of the tower a tribute to the year of the singing of the
Declaration of Independence. The placement of the tower in WTC 6's footprint allows for such proposed plans as Twin Towers 2, which calls for the towers to be rebuilt.
The most recent bout of delays was from security concerns raised by the NYPD, particularly in response to the possibilities of car bombs. I can't possibly imagine how they will make the lower 100 Ft or so of this building look attractive without windows and with extremely thick walls. Only time can tell. This will be a fantastic addition to the Manhattan Skyline - it will make for a very modern looking city.
Viewed from some angles the tower will look rectangular to recognize the Twin Towers, viewed from other angles it will look obelisk. I find the design fantastic and the spire is amazing. Although I do believe it should be taller, I can understand the reason for it staying at 1,776 Ft. If they do come around to re-building the Twin Towers, they should make them appear the same, yet modernized. Building them taller than the previous towers by one foot for every victim from September 11th should also be done. Show the world that not only can we overcome, but we'll come back bigger and better than ever.
